Nasty nasty nasty. I got horrible food poisoning within an hour of eating here, I got a spinach enchilada dish which sounded good since I love spinach typically. But oh my god, it was so nasty and bland and just bad, expired hot spinach with some cheap plastic tasting cheese dumped everywhere, plus our server didn't give a poop about coming back to check on us. Just a typical crap Mexican food joint no better than Carlos o Kelly's. Sorry not sorry.

I've been to Los Portales several times. Almost all of their food is superlatively mediocre, except for any entree containing beef, beans, or cheese - then it's just plain gross. One thing I will say in their favor, though: if you consider grease to be a vegetable, then their vegetarian fajitas are certainly well-endowed. If you're hungry enough, the chips and salsa are edible. Furthermore, the service is generally decent - hence my two-star rating.

The first time we drove by here we thought it looked rather authentic and when we finally visited, we weren't disappointed. We've had a hard time finding a consistently good standard Mexican place, but found this to be solid! We went with a group of four on Cinco de Mayo of all days. Once seated the waiters were very helpful even with the myriad of college peeps. The chips and salsa were good, the beer selection was pretty minimal with standard south of the border options, and the Margaritas were excellent. I had the tres meat combo - delicious with plenty of carne! My wife had the chimichanga, which was good and our friends had some beef tacos and probably the best item of the night - shrimp with a garlic cream sauce. The sauce on it was good enough to put to a continuous infusion! Serving sizes large enough that you've almost always got something to go home with and overall the first place we've found with consistently good normal Mexican fare. We'll be coming here when we're in the mood for a some chips/salsa, chimichangas and tacos.

Meh. Bland bland bland. Zero heat in the salsa and while I saw what looked like cilantro in there I couldn't taste any of it either. No heat in the enchilada sauce. Bland beef taco. Bland refried beans. The rice had the most flavor of anything. For $5 though it was better than going to Taco Bell.

Service was very good, atmosphere was fine. The food was disappointing. I had a burrito with ground beef and what tasted like marinara sauce on top...salsa had no heat, had cilantro in it but I couldn't taste any cilantro...chips were stale...but I guess it's decent if you're looking for something bland.

I thought that mexican food couldn't be bad but this place made me change my mind. This was literally the worst mexican food I've ever had. Don't go here. Don't. The enchilada "sauce" was pretty much tomato juice from a can. I will never go back. The service was as bad as the food. Don't make the mistake of coming here.

Most of their food is good. But I had the California Burrito Lunch (I forgot to ask for chicken) so they put in steak. I couldn't eat any bite of it without needing to spit it out because every piece of steak had gristle. They must use the leftover old pieces of steak for these burritos. Yuck! Other than that it was good.

The Mexican food was outstanding and seemed to be pretty fresh. Great chips and salsa. The menu was large and had a lot of options but not to large to be overwhelming. The service was so-so and the decor needs to be updated. The booth that we sat in was broken was wasn't even connected to the floor/wall. Will go back but hope the service improves!

I have to preface this review by alerting everyone to the fact that I grew up in Los Angeles, home of some of the finest Mexican food on earth. So, this place leaves a lot to be desired. The complimentary salsa is pretty good, and the only dish that I truly enjoy are the cheese enchiladas. Their queso dip is also great, but only because it's the same cheese from the cheese enchiladas. Everything else i've tried has been horrible, especially anything that has beef in it.

Most 21-year-olds go here for their birthday because of the healthy amount of tequila in their birthday shot. I've never been impressed with their food. There are numerous authentic and delicious Mexican places in Iowa City and this isn't one of them. Take my advice and skip it.

Really, Seriously? Its great food, if you like cafeteria Mexican food! Actually, I might have accidental insulted some of the better food served at some unified school districts. (Sorry about that tia Maria.) Went to try this place with a buddy. We started with the buffalo wings, which turned out to be dry, tasteless and drenched in a weird ketchup sauce. I had the combo mix with burrito, taco, tamale. Yes, it is a great price at $7, but it was so poorly made! The tamale was dry, it tasted like it was reheated from frozen food. It broke apart in chunks! The red spaghetti sauce on my burrito was... wait, when do you put spaghetti sauce on burritos? I swear the red sauce tastes like Ragu! If anybody else goes to this place and try their sauce, please let me know if I'm crazy! Yes, the staff are super nice and sweet. I have to give you that... so that's why they deserve 2 stars. Next time, I might go there hang out with the wait staff and have a shot of tequila before I try the food... it might go down better

I love their food, however the waitstaff is not all that great. They don't check up on you very often and sometimes I don't get what I ask for, I have to ask a couple times. But I love the food very much!

This is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in the Iowa City/Coralville area. They have great, fast service and some yummy mixed drinks. Relaxed environment to hang out with friends, with a fun feel to it. The food is always hot, fresh, and scrumptious. I would recommend going during the week though, weekends are packed.

Well, the chips and salsa were good... The taco salad had a pretty great shell, but besides that I don't have much to report. My husband ordered almost everything on the custom menu including the enchiladas, quesadilla, and rice and beans. The price is right for the food you get, which isn't much. Service was mediocre. We wouldn't go back unfortunately.

I'm also from So Cal so coming to this place was a rude awakening. The food was bland and overpriced. The decor reminded me of a chuck e cheese. If you're looking for a sit down restaurant, try La Reyna, or if you're looking for good taco's go to El Paso.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
